Walks, Rides & Excursions
Monastiraki
The flea market of Monastiraki is a melange of antiquity, used books, and clothes shops, along with street vendors of antiques and artefacts. It is next to the Ancient Agora and Thiseio and it offers itself for a gratifying walk.
Anafiotika
Situated at the northerneast side of the Acropolis, the tiny, picturesque neighbourhood Anafiotika offers itself for a beautiful, meditative walk and rich photo material.
The area started as the settlement of builders and carpenters who came from the island Anafi (east of Santorini), to work on the construction of the Palace. They started building their own houses, following the logic of their homeland, resulting in the beautiful neighbourhood that we can see today.
Flisvos
Taking the Tram from Syggrou Avenue will get you to the southern coastline of Athens in about 35 minutes.
Getting off at the Trokantero stop, you can enjoy a wonderful walk that combines beautiful seaside view and naval history—the Battleship "Georgios Averof" is the Floating Naval Museum, while nearby rests Trireme "Olympias"—a 1:1 fully functioning replica of the ancient rowing warship.
And let's not forget the gorgeous sunset. You can sit at one of the numerous coffee shops of the Flisvos Marina for an espresso freddo or an evening drink by the sea.
Southern Attica beaches
The Greek islands have the—justified—reputation for having incredible beaches. Still, you don't have to wait for a trip to the Aegean, to have a refreshing swim.
From Faliro and eastward, you can find several beaches, with or without an admission fee. The tram can take you all the way to Glyfada (also with a beach) and you can reach even farther by bus.
As an obvious rule, the farther you get to the east across the south coastline, the cleaner the water is.
Sounio
While at it, why not push it a little more and take a trip to the cape of Sounio, to admire the Temple of Poseidon? This is a half-day trip, by the public bus (or an organised tour bus).
